The male condom, or “rubber,” is a soft thin sheath made of latex, polyurethane (plastic), or animal membrane (lambskin) that is rolled over an erect penis. Condoms are designed as a barrier that prevents ejaculate (semen, the fluid that contains sperm) from entering a sexual partner’s body.
Most condoms are made of a type of rubber called “latex.” Latex condoms are the most effective condom at preventing STDs. Polyurethane condoms are a little more expensive than latex condoms and seem to break more easily. They are useful for people who are allergic to latex. “Natural” condoms are made of animal membrane (lambskin). These are also more expensive. Lambskin condoms allow more sensitivity and are effective at preventing pregnancy but they do not decrease the spread of many STDs.
Male condoms come in many varieties. Here are some things to consider when buying condoms.
- Size – The standard size will fit most men. Extra-large condoms are available, as well as “snug” sizes that are a little smaller and fit tighter than the standard size.
- Shape – Some condoms come with a reservoir in the end to hold the fluid when the man ejaculates.
- Thickness – Extra-strength condoms are available and are especially useful for anal sex and help men who have problems with condom breakage. Extra thin condoms also are available, but aren’t usually recommended due to easier breakage.
- Lubrication – Many condoms come pre-lubricated. Most lubricated condoms contain a spermicide (read the pack) that kills sperm. Initially it was felt that condoms lubricated with spermicidal agents offered additional protection against STDs. Newer studies have shown that frequent use of condoms containing spermicides offers no additional protection and may actually increase the risk of HIV and other STDs by irritating the vagina and penis. Lubricated condoms do provide some extra protection in preventing pregnancy, particularly in the event that the condom breaks. Lubricated condoms taste bad and are not recommended for oral sex.
- Flavor – flavored condoms are designed for a man to wear when receiving oral sex. They are not lubricated and generally have a mild flavor.
- Color – Condoms come in a variety of colors. The color of the condom does not make it any more or less effective.
